FODMs Visit to Locomotion Railway MuseumMay 06 2016 News >> Latest News
On a grey and misty April morning a group of FODMs members led by our Chairman Ian Burdon visited the Locomotion Railway Museum at Shildon in County Durham. The mist reminded us of the “good old days” of the fogs and smogs caused by thousands of coal fires and of course thousands of coal burning steam locomotives. Thankfully Locomotion in its shiny new building misses out the grim and grime bit and presents railway history through clean and colourful locomotives and rolling stock.
David Wallace and Charlie Walton from the Friends of Locomotion Railway Museum group greeted us at the entrance. Locomotion is an outpost of the national railway Museum at York. The new building on the former Shildon railway works site provides a great place to showcase engines and rolling stock from the national collection.
David and Charlie explained how the Friends group helps the museum to keep the displays in pristine condition. The 110 strong group also assists the museum to organise and operate the many events they run to bring railway history life. This included the recent A4 locomotives event that attracted over 100,000 thousand of visitors to the site.
Over a cup of tea David and Charlie were able to answer our questions about attracting new members, insurance for activities and dealing with the media. The Locomotion group bears many similarities to FODMs and we are looking to maintain our links with them via a reciprocal visit to Discovery Museum.
