FODMs Derwent Railway WalkMar 08 2016 News >> Latest News
Following on from our visit to Tanfield Railway - FODMs members were invited to take part in a history walk along the Derwent Walk railway path, led by John Clayson Keeper of Science and Industry at Discovery museum.
We set off on a cold but bright morning from Rowlands Gill and crossed our first viaduct. John engaged us with his well researched knowledge into the industry that used to be on this route - including coal mines, coke ovens and railways. He also pointed out historic features that are largely unknown and unnoticed.
We were even treated to an unsolved murder case at an abandoned railway station!
We covered approx 5 miles until we came to Ebchester where we availed ourselves of an excellent lunch at the Derwent Walk Inn.
We hope to arrange more history themed walks and visits for FODM’s in the NE area, if you have any particular places of interest, or would be prepared to guide a walk yourself, please contact Ed Dinning on email@example.com
