Discovery Costumes and Textiles Tour

Mar 15 2016 News >> Latest News

FODMs recent quarterly meeting was followed by a tour of the TWAM costume and textiles collection store which is hidden away in its own room behind the scenes in the Discovery Museum. FODMs member and textiles conservation volunteer Joan Milne kindly offered to lead this fascinating tour.

The collection spans several hundred years of garments and textiles and shows how fashions and styles have changed and repeated over the years. Racks of shoes, dresses, parasols, hats, uniforms and all manner of garments, some hundreds of years old were available to look at including iconic outfits worn by Torvill & Dean.

To help preserve the collection only a limited number of items are on public display at any one time so this really was a great opportunity to see one of the U.K's best costume and textile collections and our thanks go to Joan for this tour.
